What is the mobility data space?
The common European mobility data space, announced in Communication COM(2023) 751, aims to unlock fragmented transport and mobility data across Europe. Today valuable data sits scattered across carriers, shippers, platforms and public authorities, often in incompatible systems. The data space seeks to make that data discoverable and exchangeable through shared arrangements on access, trust and interoperability. The initiative builds on the Data Act, which sets the broader rules of the game for data sharing in the EU.
Mandatory or voluntary?
Participation is explicitly voluntary. Unlike the Data Act or the eFTI Regulation, the mobility data space imposes no direct obligation on companies. It is a strategic framework, not an enforcement regime. Governance proceeds in phases: first a working group that develops the arrangements and architecture, then any legal acts, and subsequently scaling up to broader application. So why join anyway?
